Mostly letters written to O. G. Steele, chairman of the Committee of Twenty, by Charles Winne on his inspection trip to the military hospitals of Virginia. Includes Winne's general report written on his return to Buffalo, 22 June 1862. Also, a letter written by Steele to Frederick Law Olmsted, general secretary of the U.S. Sanitary Commission, 17 Apr. 1862, asking for guidance in carrying out the goals of the committee; a letter from Dr. Sanford B. Hunt from Newport News, 4 June 1862; the 1 May 1862 report of the Western Sanitary Committee, with letter, 16 June 1862, from Rev. Montgomery Schuyler; letters from Morris J. Asch, stating that the surgeon general cannot send only Buffalo soldiers to Buffalo General Hospital, and from George T. Strong, thanking the committee for its contribution; a receipt for payment of board and medical attention at Buffalo General Hospital for soldier John Welch; and a note from J. E. Follett, 14 July 1862, asking Steele to give a travelling soldier five dollars.

Sanford B. Hunt (1825-1884), a Civil War surgeon, was born in Ithaca, N.Y. in 1825. Hunt was an anatomy professor at Buffalo Medical College (N.Y.) and served as editor of two Buffalo newspapers. During the Civil War he was a surgeon at Fort Monroe and later, Surgeon-in-Chief of the Army of the South-West in New Orleans. In 1866, he moved to Newark, N.J.
